Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL)

Name, Image and Likeness (NIL)

Name, Image and Likeness (“NIL”) is an avenue that allows college athletes to receive compensation. Under new NCAA guidelines that were announced in July 2021, student-athletes are allowed to use their name, image, and/or likeness in marketing and promotional materials in exchange for compensation.

Willis Law is pleased to announce the members of our NIL Practice Team, led by partners Shaun Willis and Sam Gilbertson. Our team is ready to assist student-athletes with navigating this new terrain. Whether it be University-created NIL compensation, or individual NIL deals, the NIL Practice Team provides counsel as it relates to NCAA Compliance, and negotiation strategies in endorsement and licensing agreement contracts.

Through a recently announced partnership with BUZZ U, we provide our clients with “Buzz Scores” which help assess the marketability of the student-athlete. This up-front information allows student-athletes to obtain a quantifiable marketability rate. This data point can identify potential partnerships in the NIL space for the student-athlete.
