Shoplifting Defense Lawyers Advocating for You
Two of our firm's attorneys are former prosecutors. We know what to expect from the local prosecutors and the courts, and we are well-regarded within the Michigan legal system. As a result, we are often able to negotiate charges down or arrange to have them dismissed outright.
Penalties for Shoplifting
Criminal penalties for retail theft vary depending on the value of the items that were subjected to theft:
- First degree: Assets valued at $1,000 or more. Penalties up to five years in prison and $10,000 in fines.
- Second degree: Assets valued between $200 and $1,000. Penalties up to one year in jail and $2,000 in fines.
- Third degree: Assets valued at less than $200. Penalties up to 93 days in jail and $500 in fines.
First-time offenders are often able to avoid jail time if their cases are handled correctly. This is critical because offenders with retail crimes on their record face more severe penalties as a repeat offender. We pursue all means of protecting the criminal records of our clients. Whether a negotiated settlement is in your interest or your case proceeds to trial, we have the skills and resources to achieve the best possible outcome.
